From Dictionary.com:

1. lacking confidence in one’s own ability, worth, or fitness; timid; shy.
2. restrained or reserved in manner, conduct, etc.

In a sentence:

“Although confident and outgoing among her friends, Carol became shy and diffident around people she did not know well.”
