It’s ralley annoying how often the press manages to be oblivious to obvious contributing factors. Don’t even get me started on how utterly blind they are to the “correlation doesn’t equal causation” principle. That aside: If the needs of the military provided motivation to increase resources and support for our schools, it wouldn’t be unprecedented. The National School Lunch Program was fully established after World War II, because the military found that a high number of recruits and draftees were too malnourished to serve. So the real reason for the NSLP was national security.By the way, as a school food advocate, I sometimes encounter people — right/libertarian types — who grumble that parents, not the government, should be feeding their kids. When I point out that national security was the motivator behind the NSLP, it shuts them up 100% of the time. So wouldn’t it be interesting if that worked with the anti-public-education curmudgeons as well.

For SAT, PSAT, and ACT prep tutoring in the Monterey Bay Area, including Carmel, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove, Salinas, Carmel Valley, Seaside, Seaside Highlands, Marina, and Carmel Highlands. I also serve Santa Cruz and Capitola, California.
I have official SAT scores of 2390 (out of 2400) on the new SAT (I took the test in early 2009). I may take it this year just to prove I keep up with subtle changes to the test (what is in on the test gradually changes every test, but the SAT was dramatically changed around 2005).
I have been tutoring off and on since 1997, when I was a sophomore in college. I studied psychology, primarily tests and measures, and know how to beat any test, even “IQ” tests. Let me teach your child a very important skill in our society: test taking.

I can also tutor the SSAT, ISEE, HSPT, and LSAT. I can tutor the GRE and the GMAT too.
If you are near Monterey, CA 93940, I can tutor you for test prep!

  18. I am the best SAT, PSAT, and ACT test prep tutor in the Santa Cruz/Capitola/Scotts Valley Area.
My official scores on the new SAT are 2390 (out of 2400). I took the new SAT in 2009 in order to get recent scores and to get a score on the new test (old test was out of 1600 points).

I started tutoring in 1997 and graduated college in 2000 with a BA in Psychology. As a psych major I studied myriad tests, from IQ tests to personality tests. The SAT is similar to both IQ tests and personality tests, but of course one needs to know subject matter knowledge. Probably the most surprising fact is that the SAT covers only a very limited range of topics in math and writing. In fact, the vast majority of the math most high schoolers take, is not on the SAT. I teach kids only what they need to know for the test, and I teach them test taking skills. My approach is both academic and psychological. I have gotten kids into NYU and MIT, as well as Stanford and the UCs.

My fee is $60 per hour (top companies charge around $100 an hour). SAT prep pays off if you get a great tutor and end up with a merit scholarships (some worth over $100,000).
